Seasonal rise and fall in the water level allowed local farmers to harvest a variety of 'floating rice'in the lake. IBAN IN SARAWAK

INTRODUCTION

The Ibans are a branch of the Dayak peoples of Borneo. The total population of Iban people is 100,000 in Sarawak only... Majority of Ibans who live around the Lundu and Samarahan region are called Sebuyaus. The origin of the name Iban is a mystery. It exits in many theories..During the British colonial era, the Ibans were called Sea Dayaks. Some believe that the word Iban was an ancient original Iban word for people or man. The modern-day Iban word for people or man is mensia, a slightly modified Malay loan word of the same meaning (manusia) of Sanskrit Roor.
The Ibans were unfortunately branded for being pioneers of headhunting. Headhunting among the Ibans is believed to have started when the lands occupied by the Ibans became over-populated. In those days, before the arrival of western civilization, intruding on lands belonging to other tribes resulted in death. Confrontation was the only way of survival...

BRANCHES OF IBAN PEOPLE

Ibans who live in areas in Serian district (places like Kampung Lebor, Kampung Tanah Mawang & others) are called Remuns. They may be the earliest Iban group to migrate to Sarawak. Ibans who originated from Sri Aman area are called Balaus. Ibans who come from Betong, Saratok & parts of Sarikei are called Saribas. The Lubok Antu Ibans are classed by anthropologists as Ulu Ai Ibans. Ibans from Undup are called Undup Ibans. Their dialect is somewhat a cross between the Ulu Ai dialect & the Balau dialect. Ibans living in areas from Sarikei to Miri are called Rajang Ibans. They are the majority group of the Iban people. They can be found along the Rajang River, Sibu, Kapit, Belaga, Kanowit, Song, Sarikei, Bintangor, Bintulu and Miri. Their dialect is somewhat similar to the Ulu Ai dialect.

RELIGION

An Iban woman prepares cotton for spinning

The Ibans were traditionally animist, although the majority are now Christian, some of them Muslim and many continue to observe both Christian and traditional ceremonies, particularly during marriages or festivals.

FESTIVAL

The main festival for Iban is festival Gawai Dayak..The Gawai Dayak festival is celebrated every year on the 1st of June, at the end of the harvest season, to worship the Lord Sempulang Gana. The other festival that they have celebrated are Gawai Burong ( bird festival ) and Gawai Antu ( spirit festival )...

CULTURE

They have difference in faiths, Ibans of different faiths do help each other during Gawais and Christmas. Differences in faith is never become a problem in the Iban community. The Ibans believe in helping and having fun together. This is ironic for a tribe who once waged war with others due to differences.

MUSICAL AND DANCING HERITAGE

The Iban as well as the Kayan also play an instrument resembling the flute called 'Sape'. The Sape is the official musical instrument in Sarawak. It is played similarly to the way rock guitarists play guitar solos, a little slower but not as slow as blues. One of the example of Iban traditional music is the taboh.

The Ibans have a unique dance called the ngajat. It serves many purposes depending on the occasion. During Gawais, it is used to entertain the people who in the olden days enjoy graceful ngajats as a form of entertainment. Iban men and women have different styles of ngajat. The ngajat involves a lot of precise body-turning movements. The ngajat for men is more aggressive and depicts a man going to war, or a bird flying (as a respect to the Iban god of war, Singalang Burong). The women's form of ngajat consists of soft, graceful movements with very precise body turns. Each ngajat is accompanied by the taboh or the body.

ART

I loves painting! So, let me,who presenting my group, to tell you more about painting.

Painting is an art .It is the practice of applying paint ,pigment , color or other medium to a surface .There are many methods of painting.
But now I will tell you more about watercolor painting method(because I’m totally INTO water color painting artwork!hehehe)

Watercolor painting is known to be quite demanding because it change both the absorbency and shape of the paper when it is wet and the outlines and appearance of the paint as it dries.
A watercolor is the medium or the resulting artwork, in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water soluble vehicle. The most common support for water paintings is paper (but of course, you can use other kinds such as leather, fabrics and bark papers)

Before you start watercolor painting ,you need to have the basic painting materials. They are brushes, a set of watercolor, watercolor pencils and pastels and lastly the most important one is the PAPER…
There are many techniques you can use in watercolor painting .

But for me, the most interesting is the wet to wet technique. Because, the first reason is i apply this technique when i'm painting and secondly because using this technique,an artist will produce an AWESOME life artwork.

Wet to wet technique is the application of paint or water to an area of the painting that is already wet with either paint or water.

This application will produces a striking painterly effect on a person’s painting.

Before I end my short and a-bit-boring text, take a look at some of the pictures which apply wet to wet technique. Do enjoy it everyone!

Discrimination

Age disrimination is dsirimination on the grounds of age.Athough the oretically the word can refer to the dsirimination against any age group.Age disrimination usually comes in one of three forms.Disrimination against youth (also called adultism), disrimination against those 40 years old or older, and disrimination against elderly people.

In the united states, the age disrimination in employment act prohibits employment disrimination nationwide based on age with respect to employees 40 years of age or older. The age disrimination in employment act aiso addresses the difficulty older worker face in obtaining new employment after being displaced from their jobs, arbitrary age limits.

In many countries, companies more or less openly refuse to hire people above a certain age despite the increasing lifespans and average age of the population. The reasons for this range from vague feelings youger people are more "dynamic" and create a positive image for the company, to more concrete concerns about regulation granting older employees higher salaries or other benefits without these expenses being fully justified by an older employees greater experience.

Some people consider that teenager and youth (around 15-25 years old) are victims of adultism, age disrimination framed as a paternalistic from of protection. In seeking social justice, they feel that it is necessary to remove the use of a false moral agenda in order to achiere agency and empowerment.

This perspective is based on the grounds that youth should be treated more respectfully by adults and not as second-class citizen. Some suggest that social stratification in age groups causes outsiders to incorrectly stereotype and generalize the group, for instance that all adolescents are equally immature, violent or rebellious, listen to rock tunes, and do drugs. Some have organized group against age disrimination.

They include a a screen, keyboard, and a track pad or trackball, which serves as the mouse. Because laptops are meant to be used on the go, they have a battery which allows them to operate without being plugged into a power outlet. Laptops also include a power adapter that allows them to use power from an outlet and recharges the battery.

Model of laptop
While portable computers used to be significantly slower and less capable than desktop computers, advances in manufacturing technology have enabled laptops to perform nearly as well as their desktop counterparts. In fact, high-end laptops often perform better than low or even mid-range desktop systems. Most laptops also include several Input / Output ports, such as USB ports, that allow standard keyboards and mice to be used with the laptop. Modern laptops often include a wireless networking adapter as well, this may allowing users to access the Internet without requiring any wires (wireless)……

While laptops can be powerful and convenient, the convenience often comes at a price. Most laptops cost several thousand more than a similarly equipped desktop model with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Furthermore, working long hours on a laptop with a small screen and keyboard may be more fatiguing than working on a desktop system. Therefore, if portability is not a requirement for your computer, you may find better value in a desktop model.

communication

Are you shy to be around with people? Do you know how to start a conversation with a stranger?.As we all know, starting a conversation with someone who are completely stranger can be stressful(especially when you feel like he or she have nothing in common with you).

So guys! Keep reading this text because we provide tips for you on how to start a conversation with new people. First and foremost, you have to be relax, then say hello to the person and simply tell your name.Secondly, look around to find something interesting to talk about(sure you can talk about weather but something more unusual, it would be great!).

Next, offer a compliment. But remember, it’s the best not to compliment about a person’s body or looks. A compliment is a good way to warm up for the new person.

Most people love to talk about themselves. So,the next thing you have to do is ask questions to the person.(Don’t ask too many questions if she or he is not responsive). While talking to your new friend, always look to her or his eyes and pay attention to what she or he saying(but don’t stare). This shows you are totally interested in what he or she is talking about.

Furthermore, you can add funny jokes to lighten things up!i’m 120% sure the person will get more interest in you(unless,of course you make the weirdest, annoying and stupidest jokes, which makes your new friend runaway!).

Next, always look confident when you talking to someone.Naturally, everyone like being with confident people. So,BE CONFIDENT with yourself and accept yourself as you are(means be natural!).The more confident you act, the more relax and calm you will be. Lastly, don’t forget to smile and enjoy your conversation!

Oh! We miss something to tell you, keep practicing by forcing yourself to talk strangers in different situation. This will make you better at starting conversation with new people.

Unique Custom...

Do you know about Maori tribe? The Maori people are the indigenous people of New Zealand. It is believed that the Maori migrated from Polynesia in canoes around the 9th century to 13th century AD and landed in a tiny island(okey, not so tiny) now known as New Zealand.

Maori tribe practiced many traditional customs, one of them are tattooing their skins with traditional arts called Ta Moko.Tattooing is part of their traditional custom and considered as sacred event. Maori tattooing would usually start at adolescence, and was used to celebrate important events throughout life. The first tattoo marks the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Tattooing process usually done together with the traditional flute music performance and poems chanting in order to help the wearer having less pain while his or her skin was cut extensively with curved patterns. The Maori men wore Ta Moko arts on their faces, buttocks and thighs. The women would carve their Polynesia tattoo lines on the chins and lips. All these Maori tribal tattoos were visual signs that convey the wearers' tribal identity, social status, family ranking, ancestry and spirituality.(So,it is the best to avoid using Maori tattoo designs, because its consider to insult maori tribe.)

This unique custom has been practiced for over one thousand years. For those who did not wear any Ta Moko were considered to have no social status. The instrument used for carving the skin for making tattoos was usually a sharp-edge bone chisel, and the process in creating tattoos was long and very painful. The wearer would have to fast and stay away from eating solid foods and avoid sex intimacy until the wounds on the face were fully healed.

Personally we think, Maori tribe’s tattooing custom is very interesting and unique. We, as the young Malaysian generation, should be proud and appreciate with our own customs and try to preserve it because our customs make us who we are.
